Notes About The Poem

Reworked from a poem I originally wrote and published here: 21st May 2021

Sea Glass

with bitter winds of sand and spray
and flecks of rain against my face
how different this land looks today
a drenched, vast, unforgiving place.

as turbines veiled in mist offshore
first fade then vanish out at sea
the sun, it seems, shines here no more
with frosted air surrounding me.

yet how could light forever shine
upon a beach, its sea and crowds
when storms have always over time
obscured the sun behind the clouds?

such weathered moments on the land
can help cast magic with cold seas
 - one day this broken glass and sand
may form warm, precious memories.

Mesmerising! I love they are also known as mermaid tears or pirate gems - transformative.

Thanks Rachel. I’ve not heard of those names before but love them. Whoever came up with those must have been a great poet at heart with a great imagination. Cheers - Gary

Dear Gary, it's such a pleasure to return and reread this splendid poetic gem once again. I still adore this piece. I love the sea in stormy weather, too, and sea glass smoothed by the adversity of the sea. Congratulations for your success in Mark's contest. Warmest wishes, my poet friend.. ~Susan

Oh definitely, I love the sea, especially sea glass and can get lost in imagining the romanticism of what old shape it used to be and where it came from.. like from the Titantic or some other antique ocean liner :) As for the marathon, I think it’s too close to call.. it all depends on this final placement I think. The contest is great fun and what a pleasure to read such amazing poetry throughout the many miles :))

Hi Susan. Lovely to read you again. :) Thank you! There’s just something about the sea isn’t there that appeals to so many poets? I think you must be favourite to finish first past Mark’s marathon line. If you do it will be so very well deserved. Cheers - Gary

Gary, I love the balance in your candid reflections on life, set against the positivity of the last stanza, “one day this broken glass and sand may form warm, precious memories.” Congratulations on your top 10 win on Mile 19 of my 2025 Poetry Marathon Contest. Keep your running shoes on, because Mile 20 has already started.

They really do, Gary. I completely understand what you're saying as a fellow poet. I love the rain as well. Thank you for explaining the poem's meaning - I feel as if I have discovered another layer to this wonderful poem.

Thank you Hiba. This poem was my attempt to describe how we often mellow in our thoughts (and ourselves) with the ebb and flow of time and how the present may in years to come look better and brighter to us than we see and feel it right now. This is also a reminder to myself that I can be guilty of adding sunshine to the past in my poetry when of course it rained back then as well. I’ll add that I also love to walk in the rain. The beach, the sky and the sea all take on a different ‘persona’ in adverse weather don’t they? :) Thanks again Hiba. Read you soon. Cheers - Gary

I love this Gary, it brought back memories of cold grey storms in New York from early memories, and then simply lit up at the end with warmer moments in spring and summer on the same beach warmed by sunshine, very contrasting moments in the same location. I do love sea glass, taking the shattered broken fragments and the sand and water polishing into beautiful sparkling gems. That is what your poem literally feels like, the redeeming of a somber place holding promise for another day. LOVELY poem

Thanks Bj for your great commemts and descriptions. I'm often drawn to the sea and inclement weather for my poetry ideas. They lend themselves so well to descriptions and mood setting. It's always lovely to hear when a poem of mine is able to conjure up such thoughts and memories as your own described here Bj. Thanks so much for your visit. Cheers - Gary

what an exquisite rhyme Gary, the final stanza resonates with me as someone we know had her engagement ring made out of sea glass - she and her partner spend many months on their boat in exotic foreign locations but the glass was found on our Island and designed and made here too!:-) hugs Jan xx

Jan that's lovely. Lucky people. I'll be honest and say that I didn't know what the heck sea glass was before I started writing this so a quick Google put me in the picture. Some of this poem describes a walk on the beach in the rain that Ann and I got caught up in many moons ago. I remember the waves sounding louder and thinking to myself as to how powerful the sea really is. Thanks for your comments. Cheers - Gary

Dear Gary, lyrical rhythm and rhymes sweep me up and away in the melancholy beauty and introspection of your verse. Hardship does possess the magic to transform into a thing of beauty. Your golden pen shines in this amazing piece! Congratulations for your win in Craig's contest. Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

Thank you Susan for your wonderful comments. I wasn't sure what to make of Craig's contest at first and decided I wasn't going to enter but ultimately I'm glad I did. I wasn't too clear where I was going with the poem but it appeared to just take on a life of its own when I wrote it. :) Cheers - Gary

Gary, your metaphoric poem is so beautifully articulated. Your poem matches the lyric cadence of the tides upon the sands. Such an enjoyable read I love the last stanza with its magic. So delighted this gem placed. Congratulations on your win. Cheers and blessings! Wonderful to see you posting again!

dear gary, this is beyond beautiful and so deeply meaningful and i love the questioning there and how youv also painted imagery in such a captivating cadence! You have a way with words and delivering thoughts in such an eloquent manner. And i especially loved “one day this broken glass and sand might form warm, precious memories.” Hope amidst all storms that obscured the sun and veiled its gold is why this is precious and soulfully divine and uplifting! Pleasure reading this! Best wishes

Thank you Michelle. The first 6 lines were from an old (now deleted) poem. Lines 7, 8 and the last 2 stanzas were added later. I saw the potential for it when I saw Craig's contest. Place or no place I enjoyed the challenge and its one of those rare poems I've written that didn't need too many rewrites until I was happy with it. :) Cheers - Gary

This poem brings into view your technical abilities, Gary. The broken glass meets the challenge of the moody sea, and over time loses its jaggedness becoming smoothly frosted; same things happens to us as we mellow with the passing of time. ~ Best regards // paul

Gary, this is pure poetic delight! Your imagery is spot on delivering a sense of turmoil in an "unforgiving place" of "weathered days" in "frosted air" topped off with a sense of hope. Just really well done. I think I see a winner here! Cheers and blessings. Wonderful to have you writing again! This is a fav for me.

Thanks so much Sam for your lovely comments. I tend not to enter contests now Brian's have finished (I liked his 'old poems allowed' mantra) but I saw potential in reworking an older poem of mine that, with a bit of work I thought, could be shoehorned into Craig's contest. As with all contests I enter it's nice to place but more important to me is the fact that I'm just happy with my poem...and I'm 99% happy with this one. :) Thanks for the fav Sam and, as always, your valued comments. Cheers - Gary

Some poets strive to rhyme, some to send a message, and some who want to be recognized as a poet just throw down words, helter-skelter hoping others will think them clever. Gary, your poetry succeeds each time you put pen to paper with perfect rhyme, cadence, and message... always beautifully expressed.

I honestly write primarily for myself and as long as I’m happy with the finished work then it’s a great thrill for me if others enjoy them too. Comments such as yours make this hobby of mine feel all the more worthwhile. Cheers - Gary
