Sawbill Bay UFO Sighting
Stranger than fiction, fraught with mischief,
To deceive impressionable minds of gullible people:
Who desperately want to believe in conspiracies,
And alien abductions and out of body experiences,
As was the UFO sighting on the Floodwaters, in 1950.
It happened on a peaceful summer’s day;
When a couple who were fishing in Sawbill Bay,
Ventured to climb a rock cliff and spotted below them on the lake
What appeared to look like to be two flying saucers but singular
(One upside down on top of the other) resting upon the waters:
About 48 feet in diameter and 15 feet deep at the centre,
Sloping to 12 at the edges and tilting at a 45-degree angle.
They continued on further describing the space ship
As shiny (possibly a silvery grey colour) with hatches
From which, alien life forms emerged.
Little figures, robotic type in appearance,
With inhuman like blank expressions for faces,
On two legs of different lengths,
To compensate for the disk’s camber surface
Shuffled about by altering the direction of their feet.
At the helm, one wore a red skull hat;
And the others wore blue (maybe painted),
As they appeared to be drawing water from the lake,
Or ejecting spent fuel from the machine.
While the air hummed a high pitch sound and vibrated.
The couple were afraid and so hid themselves.
But curiosity overwhelmed them, and so they peered through the cleft,
But the little figures had vanished, and the disk was in the air.
The water was tinged red, blue and gold
And with a rush of the wind; in a flash, the UFO was gone.
The night was encroaching, and the dark setting in;
So, the couple called it quits and headed home.
Next day, they returned to the scene of the event;
And heard a rush or wind and saw a flash above the trees.
The wife said she would never go there again.
A few days later, the husband returned with a friend;
Armed with a Kodak to snap photos for evidence;
If they should see the little figures who flew the alien ship
On the lake, which they did!
But the waters were too choppy to take the pics.
The little figures finished and then disappeared below the hatches.
Then came a regular blast of air,
And the saucer whizzed off like greased lightning!
They got home late and relayed it to their wives;
And vowed they’d never go saucer spotting again.
In fact, it seems as if people all over the area
Swore they saw a flying saucer that night.
The Steep Rock Echo ran with the story
Because it made for a good read in the Cold War era.
But the whole thing was invented;—a hoax!

Sawbill Bay (Upper Floodwaters) of Marmion Lake (Reservoir) and Finlayson Lake are located in Northwestern Ontario, Canada. Both lakes were part of the Seine River Diversion Project of the Arctic Watershed in the development of Steep Rock Iron Mines Ltd. (S.R.I.M.) which operated from 1939 to 1979) to provide hematite iron ore for the production of steel during World War II.
