Mom’s mother would load up the car like nobody’s business. Random supplies, clothes handsewn and hand-me-downs, handmade quilts, food, oranges, 50lb tins of shortening to convert into dual-purpose storage and seats with pretty little skirts. She was determined to make the long annual roadtrip worthwhile. As kids, she was the only Santa Claus we ever knew.
