Ruby Shopping
I spent my day shopping for rubies,
But couldn’t decide on the best,
Some were quite shiny and sparkly,
But shapes nice on some of the rest.
Some of them lined up on brooches,
While others in gold plated rings,
And some of them forming a necklace,
And others in quite abstract things.
“They’re holding their value, these rubies”,
Each jeweller said as I viewed,
I listened to all of their sales talk,
While trying to not seem too rude.
Then as the day drew to concluding,
I saw what I knew was the one,
I entered the shop really quickly,
Before the chose item had gone.
He told me the year manufactured,
The year that my mother was born,
There were traces of wear on the necklace,
But it showed it was lovingly worn.
He asked if the purchase was special,
I nodded, the rubies did glint,
He saw I was looking quite solemn,
That gave him a bit of a hint.
With tears in my eyes while explaining,
I said that my mother had died,
So this something special, my purchase,
He didn’t quite get it but tried.
I explained I’d been tasked with instructions,
Today for the rubies to come,
For her wearing in peace as she’s buried,
For Ruby’s the name of our mum!
