Notes About The Poem

A trip I'm glad I took Poetry Contest

Thi poem 'Roaming Around' I wrote in 2019 as my husband and me took a road trip from Victoria in Australia up to the 'tip of Australia in Queensland "Cape York"   ( a 7544 kilometers/ 4687 miles return)

I wrote as we travelled, and tried to capture the essence of our journey, it was certainly a trip to remember and very glad we went.

Roaming Around

Been traveling' wide and far
On tour with hubby in the car.
The sights that we have seen
now memories of where we've been.

Went right up to the tip
of our great country, what a trip.
A photo showed we could
be at ‘Cape York’ where we both stood

The wildlife and the birds
and Brahman cows in their wild herds.
Free roaming' horses too
old crocodiles saw one or two.

Rainforest's thick and lush
the cassowary looked at us.
Went swimming in the streams
then licked our way through new ice-creams.

Red windy dusty roads
with corrugation overloads.
Through river crossings drove
along the banks grew thick mangrove.

We stopped to say G'day
to 'Grey Nomads' along the way.
Swapped stories to find out
what places they had been about.

In harvest ready files
the cane fields stretch for miles and miles.
But tears when passing by
drought ridden plains all bare and dry.

Diverse and bountiful
My country's harsh but beautiful.
An artist's palette fix
all colours splendid in the mix.

Pretty sights did not lack
along the coastline coming back
Some fish my husband caught
While on the beach, I did do naught.

Of a journey two boys took
we listened to a talking book.
A real good story told
'Jack and Harry' adventures bold.

Had coffee and refreshed
while stopped along the way we stretched.
Was not too far away
our destination for the day.

Then ready for a stop
our campervan wound up the top.
Move on next day as planned
but first explore this piece of land.

My thoughts become quite clear
I often write while sitting here
My pen and paper are
In tune with rocking of the car

A few more weeks to go
And where we are I'll let you know
I'd like to take you too
So come along with me, please do

One of the many countries I have not gotten to see. Australia. It's probably so huge in the barren parts. Sounds like you had a wonderful time. I have many old travel poems. Gotta convert one to a song for this contest by Mark Springer. Good luck in the contest.
