Dennis Jones Poet Free verse

Ritual

ritual

I find that whenever I write or paint
I begin with a ritual
I light a fire that connects me to the world
 
A fire slows down time as it consumes
 
I take in my surroundings
I take in a time of day, a season, sights, sounds and smells
How my body feels in particular chair, or sitting on the ground
 
I think about life, death and the universe beyond and before
 
This fire may be literal or metaphorical
While writing I may light a candle
Or choose to sit outside by an open pit
 
And let the smoke fill my head
 
Before I begin a painting I light a fire within me
A fire that burns strong
To sustain me
 
For the continuum.
