Rise Above It
“Rise above it, be the bigger person.
No use fussing and cussing people anyway”
parents taught the stuttering boy night and day.
So he grew up placid and unperturbed
absorbing vitriol that came his way.
The teasing eventually sputtered but he was
ignored and ostracized at school by all
eating lunch with himself everyday
Teachers and counselors noticed and advised
“Don’t take it lying down, son
Pick up your cudgels and retaliate”
Contrite and confused behind the bars
the juvenile mind perpetually ponders—
Rise above it or
don’t take it lying down?
Where was the thin line I missed?
