Resting My Eyes

I say
  I'm resting my eyes
but as the darkness overwhelms me,
my mind races full of thought and images.
In this solitude of darkness
even the silence makes a noise
  tapping at my brain
  and whispering in my ears.
I fight to keep out the world
  and its busyness of nonsense
listening to the quiet of inner peace
with warm sun on my face burning my soul.
With a deep inhaled breath
  even heartbeat
  tends to slow its pace
and the clock ceases to tick.
I feel and embrace the quiet solitude
as it surrounds and envelopes me
  taking it all in,
  I am free.
