Remember Me
As the evening shadows grow longer
As light beams ebb slowly down the West
I sit by my desk with one eye tilted to the past
The other straining into future,
More conscious of change and time.
As a pilgrim in the long road of life,
I’m about to enter my journey’s end.
When death comes to claim my life,
I’ll bow in perfect acquiescence.
Now a thought strikes me hard,
That I should leave the door open,
For you to enter my chamber to rummage
And take possession of all my belongings.
I don’t have much to offer in cash or kind-
Just a few books of verse, which to me,
More precious than all my belongings,
Jotted down now and then
Dipping the pen in my life blood
Containing thoughts that whispered to me,
In the enormity of my solitude,
Where you’ll hear the faint beatings of my heart
And remember me when I am gone.
In perfect love and of free will
I leave them behind, for you to take and read
And remember me in my absence
One last thing I wish you to do;
Once death has claimed my life,
Bury me all in white,
With white blossoms covering my coffin
And this, you carve on the grave where I sleep;
“In this tomb, under the canopy of the sky
Lies someone, though a small fry
Had a heart as big as a mountain high
Who with songs of love, every heart did tie”
When after death, as I become a faded memory,
And lie in a cemetery, where silence sleeps,
Those who chance upon my grave, strangers though
For a while, will remember me,
As a humane soul who left a piece of her heart behind.
