Reluctant Wife of Politician
Her smile nearly cracked her face
All evening long
As she wandered among them
Not feeling she belonged
In any way
Their conversations held no interest
Many repeated the same one
In every corner
She had not wanted to attend this party anyway
Her husband was running for office
Against her wishes
She caught his eye and smiled
But he was deep in conversation
With an important constituent
Not aware of her in any way
She came home and took off her mask
It was a little more battle worn this time.
Fragile and beginning to tear.
It would not last much longer.
She put a little glue on it and carefully laid it
Back in the coffin
Wishing she could join it this time.
