Reluctant Wife of Politician

Her smile nearly cracked her face
All evening long
As she wandered among them
Not feeling she belonged
In any way

Their conversations held no interest
Many repeated the same one
In every corner

She had not wanted to attend this party anyway
Her husband was running for office
Against her wishes

She caught his eye and smiled
But he was deep in conversation
With an important constituent
Not aware of her in any way

She came home and took off her mask
It was a little more battle worn this time.
Fragile and beginning to tear.
It would not last much longer.
She put a little glue on it and carefully laid it
Back in the coffin
Wishing she could join it this time.

Thank you Connie. I always feel sorry for the person who never wanted the limelight but gets thrust into it.

I think she did not fully realize until it was too late.

Interesting write... I've felt this way in the past, but like Eleanor - overcame my shyness. I still harbor a deep fear of public speaking though. Much love and many prayers for you, dear friend, Gina

A very unhappy wive I should say - she's tired of pretending and wants to let go and join the mask in the coffin. How awful to tag along with a husband who only has politics on his mind and is greedy to climb higher, disregarding his wife. Terrific write. Blessings

It is sadly what happens for husbands too who get dragged into it by their wives.

Bullseye. Exactly how so many of those wives must feel... Although you never know. Eleanor Roosevelt started out feeling that way, and look at how she overcame her shyness and her distaste for the arena. "Our Eleanor" became a true American treasure. Cheers, Gershon

She was truly a treasure, and Jacque Kennedy was also a bit on the shy side, not to mention Princess Di in England.
