Relative

I remember a sigh
and its sound buries this
heart beneath a lifetime
of imagined failures
and real disappointments
as it struggles to breathe

I remember sounds
of pleading voices
and their ache descends
upon a soul with
the deepest mourning

I remember
the ache of hands
wanting simply
to feel yours, and

that ache is
the only
pain I have

ever
really

known
