Sonnet 14 lines  88 words 2023
Colored Pencil Illustration  G. Gaul

Unearth answers about the afterlife;
consider worlds where life starts with water.
Ever evolving to overcome strife,
learn to live with nature's proper order.

Without it, you'll miss that zest to exist
in those never-ending thoughts that we keep;
most people hope that their lives long persist,
nonexistence delusions do run deep.

"Rebirth" has a storied reputation,
which rises from living waters within.
Butterflies undergo transmutation,
become aware of how change can begin.

Together, these make an afterlife dream;
dream a new dream on this emergent theme.

we all waited around 9 months embraced in a safe cavern of salty water before our entry into this external "real" world (and I use the term lightly "real" world) ... the ocean exists in our inner world where we are embraced until eventual release into this world, the ocean waits for us (Life) outside the cocoon. The tide pulls us out and back in again and the rythym of tides repeats and continues ...again, and again.

Hi Greg, I realized I had not read one of your wonderful poems in quite a long time! I am so glad that I found this thoughtful response to your existential musings! Also, your sketch is amazing and works perfectly with your words. I love the image of the butterfly! Hope you are well. Blessings!

There's a spiritual, mindfulness feel to many of your poems Greg. After enjoying reading this; another of your great thoughtful pieces, I'm picking up, rightly or wrongly on the idea of considering an individual's consciousness continuing to exist after the death of the physical self and to live in harmony with mother nature. We humans depend on nature more than nature depends on us. What a fine artist you are too - This illustration would make a great Prog. Rock album cover. :) Cheers - Gary

Gary, thanks so much for commenting and you are correct it's about the afterlife. In Buddhist tradition, they refer to it as rebirth not reincarntion. They are slightly different and at death your afterlife is determined based on your acts of merit in life. My own belief is that one folds back into nature, the ocean like a single droplet folds into a wave of seawater. Water being the base of all life on earth, I believe this has many spiritual ramifications. I greatly appreciate your insights and interest.

Thanks so much. That's what I was hoping for...the goal of many poems, to generate thought. Thanks again.
