Re: Johnsons Antidote

re: Johnsons Antidote by Banjo Paterson a great poem..... Yes Good morning sir ...maybe it just worked for old goanna:) We in the 1950's used condys crystal jammed into the snake bite after cutting and sucking the poison out of the bite area. one poison to beat another they said...others shot a finger off or used an axe to get rid of the offending bite. my old man had bull terrier x cattle dogs for bailing up wild Scrubber cattle and then he'd bring tame cattle to them and the wild ones would join the herd for safety...these dogs would go snake hunting in the night often, and some would get bit by the 9 foot long Mulga brown snakes they fought...what to do 30 miles from town no Vet either...so pinch up the obvious bulge of the bite and use sheep shears to cut the lump off the dogs hide? dogs survived this rough treatment if bit only once....but were sick for days after....Don

Hi Don. I love 'Johnson's" so much that i'm learning it, to perform. Just not sure about the bit where deadly snakes are harmless to the poison weed. I think Banjo means 'compared' ( to the weed). What is your take on the line? all the best.

I thought I had it tough cleaning up after the headless chickens fell over. had to chase them for my mom to ring their necks or chop it off, my brothers had no problem ;}

Well, I would not want to trade places with those tough dogs..Some dogs must be bred to want to fight those poisonous snakes..Some seem just to look for them..Over here we have had in the past rattlesnakes, water moccasions, coral snakes, copper heads, and some sea snakes that are poisonous..Now there Cobras in Florida and other kinds from other countries that have been turned loose..Sara

Don: Being a great Banjo Fan....I just had to click on Johnson's Antidote to see what you were writing. Brought back some fun memories of the Geebung Polo Club and the Man from Ironbark that I cut my teeth on. Wow a vivid image of bush medicine ...... at least some of them made it...... luckier than poor old Stump.
