Notes About The Poem

I wrote this poem shortly after the historic flight made by three US astronauts in December 1968. The US was battling Vietnam and ulitmately lost that war. Funny that while astronauts just went around the moon again, the US finds itself in another losing inane war of choice. The narcissist leader who considers himself so smart seems incredibly stupid. 

put a lid on it

Borman and Anders and Lovell have gone around the moon
And charter trips in rocket ships may well be starting soon

We've reached a time in history that's called the lunar age
A frantic race to conquer space has now become the rage

Meanwhile down here on Mother Earth things haven't changed one bit
We bomb and raid what we have made led on by some half-wit

Man doesn't stop and try to save the treasures that are near 
Let's lock the latch on the booby hatch—the loony age is here

This may all come to an end at some point, but there is a lot of money on their side and a lot of business people and other professionals who are willing to go along. In the meantime, we have our own sense of self-worth, which they cannot take away from us...it's not dependent on them. In the meantime, I am going to many demonstrations and making phone calls. The internet reports that Laos was the "lucky recipient" and we know how that didn't help with the war we were fighting. It's hard to look at things like this when we know that there's enough on this planet to allow for all to have a decent life. Too bad the very rich and selfish want it all. Charles made some very rational comments that will likely have no impact on the would be king in the USA. Hope you are doing well. I am sending smiles and just hoping for the best. Personally, I won't let the political situation take away my personal feeling of wellness. I keep that separate and protected even during all the demonstrations I have been going to. I like how you compare what's happening to a board game. As we both know, many people hurt when we bomb another country. Real diplomacy and negotiation could solve differences in today's world, but that takes a cooperative effort that the people at the top here find inconvenient. Sending smiles, of course!!!!
