Proud People
Were we not meant by design to select what is best?
Choose the path sure to bring us success?
And operate always without great flaw,
following truth and abiding by law?
We know our desires, and with reason, sublime,
we can mold our world so our dreams will align.
Perfect knowledge, perhaps, is not ours,
but our potential spans further than twinkling stars.
So, when we find that our plans were awry,
when we stub toes on the rock that anchors the sky,
when we fall in the traps built by our own hands,
wouldn't we hearken to life's reprimands?
But, lo, there is something that could shatter our grace,
that lives within us, in its own hallowed place.
And we are tempted to from our faults hide,
because we are servants to our own pride.
