I believe most on this site believe themselves master writers, though there are a few really outstanding writers of which I find you to be one, funny how the really good poets don't believe they are good, and the really bad poets believe themselves to be superior writers, such is the human mind, as, for the bullying, I pay no mind to barking dogs no matter which neighborhood I'm in...let them bark...

Sage advice re the bullying. I never set out to write poems, but short stories, now my writing addiction seems to be fixed on poetry - as it is another language entirely. Conceits and metaphors. I believe writing and creativity through art and music, is a lifeline for many, for some a complete religious experience to self and interpreting life.

all of this is beyond my simple mind, I write for many reasons none I really understand, I suppose it is a habit like tapping a finger on a table, a nervous tick, then again just something to be amused about, could be I just play at poetic verse aligning it with others who write just to see how well I could write if I really wanted to be serious about it, who knows, my insanity only goes so far

You are an outstanding writer Parker. I write some absolute crap sometimes. I just write, it would seem constantly (like the Red Shoes story, I cannot seem to stop writing). It is my worst addiction. It's gone well past a falling grace malaise now, like one needs drugs or alchohol, I have a need and want to write. Every poem is the last, I swear, but I have to write another...and god knows what is going on in my mind when I deliver words to page. It will more than likely be my undoing.

I was inspired to write this poem, due to the inordinate amount of cat-fighting that occurs regularly in this joint.I joined to be with other writers who are inspirational and motivational. It's all well and good to share thoughts and feelings but when it denigrates to the bullying of others, it has to stop. That is not what this site should be about. I'm no saint, but I cannot abide the bullying, name-calling, moral high ground others seem to think they can take with others, religious, politically or morally. I usually block - 3 strikes and you're out - if I'm bullied, or something petulant without any form of fact to validate (i.e. not knowing a person and their background) is proferred as a means of tearing any self-worth of a writer to shreds. Positive input is what is required, and motivation/inspiration. If you can't abide a writer move onto the next. Just my thoughts on the negatives that continually pepper spray their vitriol in others comment boxes. Not addressed to you Parker.

Poetry to a true poet is about giving. Talented writers can compose verse without the purpose of giving unto others but instead to feed what they themselves need--be it attention or some other emotional drug. The world now attempts to change the morality/essence of poetry, imho. And does so by weakening the recognized level of what is and was once termed to be high level poetry. Pandering to bring in ever greater the masses..

Emily Dickinson has a firm grasp on truth. Tell all the truth but tell it slant — Success in Circuit lies Too bright for our infirm Delight The Truth's superb surprise; As Lightning to the Children eased With explanation kind The Truth must dazzle gradually Or every man be blind...

To your opening sentence. True, in a sense. For all intent and purpose, one may commence the write with the idea of giving to others. However, on completion, you (the writer, the poet) will find that the end result is something in yourself you have been looking to 'unlock', find the answer to, secure an understanding of, receive love that is lacking, peace that is wanting, closure that is calling, a beginning that is opening, for eg.

The writer/poet can be viewed as altruistic in the 'giving' of self through thoughts put into words, the virtues and the darkest warts and all efficacy, for the reader to take away some meaning, empathetic likeness, or lesson – be ‘provoked’ into thinking and questioning the ‘true’ intent behind the poem, essay. However, in the end the writer/poet writes for 'self'. That is the basic truth. Riddle me this then, is that ‘basic’ truth, poetic truth or scientific truth? Poetry is about feeling, no? And Science is about facts? I read an interesting article some time back about how the two relate. You may or may not agree with this, but an interesting take on it all.

Now my dear friend, to the fine creative poem you just gifted us, bravo. Nothing stirs the heart like truth, even when it hits hard. Poetry should be about truth--as what good is poetry if it is about lies, clever deceptions, shallow meanderings, etc? The old questions, does a poet express heart's truth comes to mind. Does the poet expose the soul and do so as a gift unto others? One must remember such is no easy task as the natural reaction is not to --expose-- too much. Since the exposure is viewed to be a major weakness for others to exploit. Yet , truth is by presenting truth in ones poetry, regardless of how others may accept it or think less of the author is instead a great strength. The idea that truth is strength is paramount in poetry. As who wants to read lies, written just to impress others?

Can a fine writer --play at poetry-- to gift pleasing verse? Sure, but those deeper experienced in poetry can usually see the essence is not there, imho. There is much to be said about poetic heart. Or the expressing of real life in verse. The exposing of true self, true life experience and doing so with truth and the thought of giving to others--for the benefit of others... If this all seems to be too much of a romantic idea of poetry, then so be it. To this old poet Romanticism is the essence of poetry.... And truth/heart in the writing is the foundation.. God bless

That's a rather noble consensus by the majority John. I understand the art of provocation implicitly. On the whole, 'Poets' write for themselves first; others come after 'self'. Lovejoy-Burton

"Literature is a process of producing grand, beautiful, well-ordered lies that tell more truth than any assemblage of facts. Beyond that, literature is many things, such as delight in, and play with, language; also, a curiously intimate way of communicating with people whom you will never meet."
