Poetry Saved Me
When I was a broken little girl
my grandma gave me a journal and pen
write your sorrow, write it for the world she said
and I did and I do and will never stop
for because of the journal and my grandma's faith
I am a writer, a poet . . .
Poetry saved me- for my scribbles
instead of stories, became poems deep and sad
in poetry I can pour my innermost thoughts
I can release all the words whirling in my head
poetry sets me free, it is my anchor . . .
my safe harbor at the end of each day
and welcomes me like a cloak of silk
If I had not found poetry or if poetry did not exist
where would my words go . . .
on pages of a diary for no one to read except me
oh, no the thought of that is dreadful
for I have things to share, things to say
that other poets understand
more than family or should I say in a different way
poets who read my words know my heart
my soul they hold in their hearts
oh no, if there was no poetry, I would
still be broken . . .
