Poetry For Poets: I Own This- Edition

Well hopefully you've read the last "Poetry for Poets", now here's the one I wanted to write, enjoy...

POETRY FOR POETS
(I own this- edition)

Poems
more organic than fertilizer
rooted in the **** of life
manure

Some grow wild
seeking their light
through a gnarled thicket
of images
and symbolism.
Ill watered
or sprayed with chemical defoliants
they strangle themselves,
few
managing to blossom.

Manicured
Poems thoughtfully precisely planted
to achieve optimum yield
banquet

			though occasionally
		poems require to be forged
	beaten into shape
like a horse shoe
with a few holes
	accurately placed
		ensuring they will be nailed
			to their purpose

Pruned
dead words and metaphors
selectively snipped away
stunning display

There are times when it’s best to live with your poetry
Cover yourself with its words until they stretch and become sloppery
For its comfort increases as the stanzas begin to fray
Patched elbows illuminating what you intend to say
And eventually you’ll have a poem to slip into by the fire
To savour with hot chocolate as it ignites your desire

Poems
more organic than fertilizer
flourish when tendered
with love

Poetry written from the heart (Imo) shines brighter than (cop out) poetry adapted specifically to comply with the 'Acceptable' standards of one's peers. What is lost though, in the pruning? There was a line from the Movie 'Educating Rita' where an English Literature 'OU' (and somewhat jaded) Professor who had just began tutoring a mature new Student (who had never taken an exam in her life) asked her "What could I possibly teach you?". He added..... "I could teach you how to write and pass an Exam Test but how much of your natural creativity would I be destroying?"................ Your poem suggests a parallel. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085478/?ref_=nv_sr_1

longest time friend. You've just exhibited to the highest quality exactly what I have missed in here for months. Your lines are so exciting and your words are each having that second hand of drawing me back to them again and again and again irrespective of how many times I have gone through them. Its nice to be home and you are part of the reason I have this refreshing feeling. A definite 7. Cheers!

I agree......sometimes I must live with a poem for a long long time, before I see what needs pruning, snipped away, or tossed. The best are ones I have changed and rewritten more than once. You said it best !

How this is truly interesting,,,after reading so many blogs and poems with an explanation a cover for how educated the poet is,,others that come on soup, and in their unique way tell us we are all a bunch of amateurs,,well i would point them to this poetry this free verse of self expression...this is a brilliant poetry Scott, a cut above most here on soup.....
