Notes About The Poem

Pet Bat - Nursery Rhyme

Sammy had a little pet it was a little bat
He had a friend who had a cat and one who had a rat
A parrot or a hamster or a little sausage dog
might have been a better pet, perhaps even a frog

For bats don’t purr and bats don’t bark or even parrot-speak
but even in the dead of night his bat won’t even squeak

He thought his bat should have a name, the name he chose was Dennis
For when his mom tripped over it she said it was a menace
So now his bat has got a name and mummy helped him pick it
Then Sammy took his bat outside and used it to play cricket

Hi Terry..there's always a 'kicker' at the end of your poems (or should that be 'hitter'?) but I didn't see it coming..Howzat? you might ask..I saw the picture. ..Hey, I remember that pet rock thing..I think it was Noel Edmonds who used to spout on about them. Your poem gets one big Sunday smile from me. Cheers - Gary

Phew. Someone else, at last, that remembers pet rocks. Most people look at me as though I’m some kind of fruit-cake….

Thanks, Ilene. I always said I can’t draw. I guess my picture proves the point, but you know what, I kinda liked it. Glad you enjoyed. Terry

Thanks, Jenna. Way back in yesteryear there was a short-lived, possibly localised, craze of keeping a pet rock. Literally a stone that you would think of as a pet. (I never ‘got it’ so didn’t fall for it). Anyway, I thought if you can have a rock as a pet, why not a bat… as in, a bat you hit balls with… the picture was to keep the ruse going… or was it? Terry
