pear salad dancing with color.... funeral today
Second death in our church from COVID. Here in rural Georgia neighbors, friends, family, church members have always brought in food and helped when there was a death. Now times have changed and the family no longer meet at home, etc. Our church as do other churches in our area prepare a meal for the family on the day of the funeral and most of the time the family eats at the church's social hall. I am still weak and exhausted but I fixed pear salad so my husband could take it over to the church to add to the meal. I shred lettuce for the bottom then arrange the pears, placing a teaspoon of mayonnaise in each hollow(where the core was) then add a red cherry on top of the mayonnaise topping it all off with shredded sharp cheddar cheese. One can put whipped cream, cottage cheese, cream cheese or some other item in the center if mayonnaise is not right for you.

A fine, short salute to someone valued and loved in your piece that shares the careful preparation of your pear salad. I admire your stamina + dedication, Sara, in contributing to the funeral though you are weakened yourself. Be well dear lady. Brian

Brian, Right now I don't have much stamina but thank you. Our church has dwindled down to almost non-existent since COVID. We don't have very many to do what needs to be done. I haven't attended very much trying to stay well but alas we got sick anyway. I thought yesterday that maybe I was over the hump but today not so great. Sara

Hi Sara, That awful disease has taken too many lives. I’ll be glad when it's a thing of the past. That was kind and thoughtful to prepare something, although you are still recovering-Alexis

Alexis, I am of the opinion that this virus is with us from now on. Maybe the type or form will constantly be changing but we will need vaccinations every year to prevent getting sick from it. I can say from experience that you do not want it even in its mild form. We as a family are getting better but we are still weak. We are no longer contagious but our strength is just not what it once was. Sara

In Ireland, we gather for a meal after funeral but it's very much up to individual families. I read your post with interest and pear salad sounds delightful. I might do that next week as we are having a family gathering...Delice

Delice, I am sure that our ancestors over here came from different places in the UK or similar areas but of course people from all over the globe are here today and brought customs from the country of origin. I use canned pears for this but one could use fresh ripe pears that were easy to pare and slice then get the core out. Thanks for dropping by. Sara

In Malta we have simpler customs. There is no place for food during funerals. Still a pear salad must taste wonders.

Victor, I know that no two areas of the world are alike nor are they all the same in America. I guess the custom/s got started years ago when there was a death and no restaurants or quick meals the women in the community knew that they could help out by offering some food from their home to fill in the gap so that the family that was suffering would at least have some food to eat. Neither place is wrong only there are differences. Sara

A lovely salad. Sweet gesture. Great haiku! Sorry for your loss. I live in Georgia too.

Kim, He was a really nice man and we lost my husband's cousin who was also a member of our church. We all got sick about the same time. It has been really hard on my husband and me. We are older so it hit hard. We had the vaccinations in January and February so if we had not had them we probably would be in heaven today. Sara
