Patriotism

Flag proud at last,
The polls and pundits did not ballot this
Wave of pride rising from morning mist;
I can look up at the stars
And know these stripes can heal.
Remorse forgone. I see them cast
Ballots and weight the bell to peal
The myth that figment us,
The division O so carnivorous.
Flag proud for the first time at last,
Let us awake and go out
Saying good morning with a shout.
Nothing more need come of this
Except that America we did this
To bring the revolution full circle
A blend of races blending work and miracle.
The wall has fallen
And cannot go up again
Without a long and sudden shudder of pain.
Flag proud at last
We wipe our collective tears
We who stand here severed from the past
That links us forever in cruelty and cares.
Did you not know, did you not dream
Wide-eyed, wide-mouthed children in the stream
Of coming dawn, that those marches
Had love and retribution coming from arches
In the democratic gleam?
