Parental Advice

You will realize ¦¦¦¦ wisdom,
When ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ age, and experience,
Gained from ¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ vexing situations,
Yet, ¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ You do the same,
There is ¦¦¦ joy in detachment,
Forsaking ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ pleasures, pains,
For things ¦¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ enduring.

Don’t be a slave to ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦
¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦ slave-drivers ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦
¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ explore the works of men,
Who ¦¦¦¦ experienced ¦¦¦ truths,
¦¦¦ distilled in ¦¦¦¦¦ words, wisdoms,
Which may grate your ears ¦¦¦¦

¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ don’t be prey to ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦
Rushes of anger ¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦ over cables,
¦¦¦ with emails and posts ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦
Without thinking ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ -
I have done that and ¦¦¦ living to regret.

Don’t drink bottled and sealed ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦
Its sugar, water and carbon dioxide,
Will ¦¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦ disorient you, ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦
¦¦¦ don’t eat fast food ¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦
They will suck you into their ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ line.

¦¦¦¦¦¦ do not ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ see with closed eyes,
And hear with deaf ears, ¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦
¦¦¦ music and rhythm can corrupt,
¦¦¦ make sinning seem ¦¦¦ tempting.
The age of innocence, ¦¦¦¦ is gone,
Every man is a ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ army.

¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ follow this advise, son,
¦¦¦¦ you are mature ¦¦¦ wise as me,
You will say, ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦ “Thank you Papa,
For your words ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ wisdom,
To my children, ¦¦¦¦ I will pass this wisdom.”

Dear Lin, the blackout format is such a cool way to unearth a whole new conversation from an older poem. It feels like getting a handwritten letter passed down from someone who has already made all the mistakes and just wants to save you the trouble. Also, the mix of big life lessons and random, super-specific dad advice about sugary drinks and hot-headed emails is funny and genuinely grounding. Loved Reading, Blessings, Daniel

That’s a good interpretation of using the blackout challenge, Daniel. I still feel like I’m editing someone else’s work. In Truth I am but I don’t take it seriously. Thanks for your thoughts.
