Paghuli Ng Bulalakaw (Catching Falling Stars)

*Paghuli ng Bulalakaw*

Minsan ako'y nakahuli ng isang bulalakaw,
at sa aking mga kamay inilagay
Ako'y lubhang napaso, nasaktan ng lubusan
kaya't aking itong pinakawalan...

Isang gabi, natanaw ko ang isang tala
na nagliyab sa himpapawirin
Akin lamang tinignan, at aking pinagmithian
Wari ko'y ngayon, tama ang aking ginawa.

                                                                      *

*Catching Falling Stars*

Once I caught a falling star
and cupped it in my hand...
It burned me so, it hurt me so
that I just had to let it go

Then one night, I saw a star
that blazed across the sky...
I looked at it, just wished upon it
and I knew that this time, I did right.

***********

Oddly enough I haven't really written any poems in
my native tongue, tsk tsk shame on me!!
(I've only written only ONE, wow)
& it's taking me forever to translate it to English
so, I decided to go about it the other way around
and translate an old poem of mine instead, & here
it is! My Filipino translation though is sort of rusty when
it comes to the flow of the poem (but hmm I guess
only those who know how to speak Tagalog would see that ^_~)

it's fun though so I just might try to write more translations!
Gert sure makes this look sooo easy!! ;)

Coolio, your only poem in your native tongue. Now here's a chance to learn something about your native language! I really love this one, it sounds so sweet and a bit melancholic, but full of hope also. :) I haven't made a wish upon a falling star for a long time now...

My congratulations, Nikko!!! I believe the Tagalog-version sound much better than the English one!!! It will be very difficult to translate a poem with rhyme into another language with rhyme. But I believe that rhyme is not essential at all and that the meaning is more important. Thank you also for your remark on "Summer Day"! Also I believe that not many Sopies will understand Tagalog, but it is great to see and read both versions of your poem! Lahat ng mga pinakamahusay na, Nikko!...Gert:)

I've been meaning to comment on this ever since I read it, Nikko! What a beautiful, beautiful poem. Almost makes me want to learn Filipi.......but I'm way to lazy to do that. Haha. Enjoyed! -Grace

Back from a two week vacation, nikko! And I'm just passing by to see your work and...wow! Your first translated poem! It's kinda hard for me to translate my poems( I am from Romania), but sometimes I try to translate just the ideas, the feelings I've captured in the poem, not the exact words. Can't really compare the two poems( don't speak your native language) but I bet you did a great job! It helps to write in your native language for once in a while( it helped me, anyway)!:) Emily

Nikko...it's really fun writing in our native tongue...nang doon kasi yung authenticity,,,na iinjoy ko pa nga ang mag sulat ng mga tulang bisaya kaysa sa Englis...ang tula mo'y napakaganda at kamangha-mangha...precise translation!...^_^ v

A sweet little poem Nikko. I guess it goes for lots of things, beautiful to gaze upon and dream about, but don't try to capture them. Hehe, now look where you sent my mind. Of course I just realised that rhymes in one language most probably aren't going to rhyme in another language. I'm intrigued to know how your poem sounds in Tagalog. Hope your wish came true ~ Sharon :)

That was a wonderful little poem and gosh, how strange you are writing mostly in a language not your native tongue! Nikko, read my blog and you will see the horrible day that most likely lays in wait for me, and I can do nothing about it. I had only 5 hrs. sleep and I think it is gonna be VERY tiring day but if I try to sleep more, I am sure right now i couldn't . Luv, Andrea
