Overlord

I’m looking to the sun searching for life’s answer
A truth starts to dawn, it could just feed me cancer
Still the moon’s mostly harmless, phasing away the night
Has a dark side too, that stays hidden in full light?

I know there’s darkness
upon my shoulder
I miss old flames
that used to smoulder
I feel sweat pour
and growing colder
I ache and shiver
under beads of solder

As for those shiny stars, twinkling in heavens high
Some are eons dead, still pulsing a white lie?
Our galaxy hoards them as supermassive treasure
Stuffed inside a black hole, that gorges at leisure

I won’t go nova
perhaps bipolar
I may lose my head
like a sniped soldier
I could love a god
not his mass controller
I will confess
the herd feels older

The cosmos gets younger the further out I look
Thirteen billion years of light, our connection took
On a large scale of nothing is how my mind thinks
The universe keeps growing, as its lifespan shrinks

I drag granite
upon a roller
I put my chisel
into the boulder
I sculpt an angel
but haven’t told her
she’s not my soul
just its beholder

My angel brings comfort, if not flattery
Helps to keep me grounded, in idolatry
If I was a god, my first commandment would be
Worship all those you love, and put them before me

Hello David, nitty gritty (Dirt Band) lol! tension, yes as Lin said Sisyphus. Your metaphor of stars being "white lies" sets up in my mind a cynical but honest stage for the rest of the piece. Then the shift at the end, turns the first commandment on its head to prioritize human connection over divine idolatry, feels grounded, necessary rebellion against the vastness you described earlier. A strong pivot from the existential to the personal. I am always thankful I am not God, too many issues. :) Blessings, Daniel

Who’d be a god! It’s a good job I didn’t carve out my other 9 commandments lol! A lot of personal existentialism going on in this one Daniel, I can only write from my own agnostic pov, so there’s a big part of me in this one, yes some of those stars pulsing away are already dead possibly even gone nova, so lots of white lies going on in the galaxy maybe even a supermassive one too! A bit like down here on good old planet Earth, I’ll stand by my first commandment though oh and my angel of course :) cheers David

Sisyphus came to mind while reading this one, David but pushing that boulder uphill forever was his punishment for being cunning and deceitful. That is not who you are. You are the sculptor of stone who would chisel an angel if that were possible... Your angel is not made of stone, and not all angels need to be told how you feel about them. Your rhyming in these lines is impeccably done without force and balance, all of which lend to its originality, If a god, your first commandment would be an act of humility befitting a god. Is that too much fawning over you, even if you were a god? If it is, indulge me my thoughts, my lord. lol

I always wondered and have many questions about that first commandment Lin, only because I’m human, yeah far too much fawning over this mere mortal lol! I honestly don’t seek it out, I just enjoy writing these existential pieces, I’m delighted you seen through the rhyme scheme, alternating with monorhyme stanzas, I think it worked well here! Me a lord certainly not, I’m totally irreverent to all that stuff, I do love the story of Sisyphus though, he certainly got his comeuppance, we all need a little deus ex machina in the form of an angel, great comment Lin, you seen all the angles in this one, how’s that my lady, cheers David

By God we all need an angel! Love the vulnerability in this beautiful soul laid bare piece David. Absolute fave - think I'll press fave three times for the jackpot :) it made me recall my past dalliance at being a dedicated muse myself, it's a high octane activity (but I've been messing with Picasso lately I suppose). Favourite line "I sculpt an angel but haven’t told her" - especially from a tough guy!

Primal chanting is so uplifting, this is one of my fav killers tracks, one could march into battle singing (I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier) lol!

It's the only killers track I know but it gets me - I love a chant maybe! I've never been within three feet of a real life Picasso, only ever a muse to a sweetheart - kinda miss it :)

I think I’ve only ever brought an angel into one of my poems before, they are good to have around, especially when existentially questioning yourself and the universe, :) Nah I’m not a tough guy, just one that stands his ground, thanks so much for the triple fave lol! You certainly have been diving into Picasso’s work of late, now that takes a tough gal LG considering his reputation with the erm ladies lol! Hope you enjoyed my Killers snippet above, I felt a little bit of connection in that song, cheers David

I see you’re back from sunny Spain Tom hope you had a great time, I always like to tackle the cosmos and search for meaning, ha don’t worry about that (Big Crunch) if it happens it’s just a reset button, so if you’re gone, you’ll be back in no time whatsoever! Cheers David

Haha! Thank you Ink, You have a way of making me feel happy about my poems, there’s a lot of me in here for sure, well a lot of everything perhaps, such duality really exists everywhere in the cosmos, I think the only way to make sense of all, is to get amongst it and spell out how you feel! Well I don’t have to tell you that! Yes you should write away while awe inspired and don’t stop :) thanks for the high praise and fave! Cheers David
