Over the Top
Over the Top (1)
When is poetry by man, much more than scuzz (from top)?
Know a bard who hears his muse say it’s past time to stop?
Our emotions are dust devils that spin blinding us,
And most promises made, weeds that time mows flat. No fuss!
Oh, it's hard to touch real truth that our own egos sink,
Far below all expectations, and though some may think
Of the depths that ponds possess (where bright, white lilies bloom)!
(Grok that nutrients that float all buds rise up from gloom)!
What is there Sir that a mensch needs fear? Real content's blessed,
For the heart cares not, a whit, how love's soft words get dressed.
Damned be poetry, in fact, if your soul owns its smile,
Seek to serve, stand in your truth, be brave, surrender guile!

Poet’s Notes:
Just for fun, I wrote this poem using a rhyme scheme of
- - / - - - / - - - / - - - / - -
in every line just to see if I could do it and what it would look. Mission accomplished! At least in that sense, it is indeed over the top. Note that the poem requires a lot of one syllable words to achieve this (although multi-syllable words retain their rhythm in this scheme). The work sounds best read conversationally I think, but there still is this very strange meter underlying it all! What fun!
