Outside My Door

Outside my door
The leaves moved as
Fingers on a Giants hands
Serenaded by the sonnets
Of larks and sparrows and jays
The suns rays were a flare today
Blinding no darkness could survive
But whether it be the darkness of
My hearts troubled past
Or the deep silence from this
Lone immobile creature lying still
A shadow cast all glory upon
The life I had first seen
I lifted the little birds body
A charcoal color adorned with a black mask
And told him I was sorry for his demise
Then I buried him among the flowers
Knowing their roots would enslave
His small little corpse and comfort him
For there was nothing more I could do
A prayer for him and for me
As silence was the spoken word.

I was just thinking the other day when I first saw the lifeless body of a baby bird, fallen from its nest. I was a young girl, I'll never forget it's translucent body and bulging black eyes. Then j cane across your poem. Great imagery. Nicely penned.

You have a heart as big as all outdoors! This is sublime Kelli '...serenaded by the sonnets of larks...' '...silence was the spoken word,' simply lovely!! Best wishes, Keith

It's true... have you seen the movie 'American Beauty' with Kevib Spacey and Annette Bening? There is a character there who is constantly taking photographs... even of dead birds in which he finds great beauty. Your comment reminded me of that movie. I have a poem entitled 'The Plastic Bag' about a scene from the movie which, once seen, can never be forgotten. Please check it out.

A very touching poem. I've written one on a dead mouse I found one day on my morning walk. Thank you for reading my true experience with my dog. / M

It is a sad sight to see death in nature. Well said. But thank god there is life there too and beauty all around us. I praise God for this beautiful world we live in.~~~Darlene
