Oscar Winning Performance

For many years I hid behind a MASK of pain.
I was a brilliant actress, but it was a FACADE.
I wore a fake smile on my face. Inside I was
BROKEN and my spirit was TORN. My pain
inside reached a boiling point and my ILLUSION
of happiness came to an abrupt end. And I cried
a tsunami of tears. The mask CRACKED and came
crashing down. Only then did I start to
heal from years of mental and sexual abuse.
I am FLAWED and IMPERFECT, but I love and
accept myself, my flaws and all. When I fell in love
with the broken little girl inside, healing came like
an avalanche in my soul. If one person is moved to
break their silence of abuse, then sharing my story
was worth it. The main thing I want to convey to
anyone reading this, it was not your fault. You were
a victim. Your pain doesn't define you. It is battle scars;
you can rise above a shameful past you're victorious,
my friend. Tell your story to heal and inspire others.

This is a very powerful piece Alexis, made more so because it's true. A couple of lines from the George Benson song "The Greatest Love Of All" immediately spring to mind: "Learning to love yourself It is the greatest love of all" Much kudos to you. Cheers - Gary

Excellent advice my friend. No you were not at fault. You were a victim of the worst kind of bully. It wasn't YOU he was after it was ANYONE who could not defend themselves. Someone like that is actually more broken than you are. And he will surely pay the price for his abuse of those who could not fight back. Kudos to you for overcoming what he tried to do to you. God Bless, JB

Definitely an Oscar worthy performance Alexis. It’s so good you overcome the pain of the past and good on you for telling your story, I’m sure it will be of help to those out there who have or are suffering from abuse. Be it mental or physical no one should have to suffer abuse of any kind…. Belle

Many people accept the label of "victim" rather than chalk it up as a learning experience. Congratulations on your attitude and poetry!

None of us are perfect, we all have our faults but we must forgive ourselves and move on learning from any mistakes we made. Good luck in the contest and enjoy your day. Tom

Oh my what a sad but inspiring story dear Alexis... from what I understand from what you have penned, your soul's scars have healed and you have risen up vitoriously to share your story to others, who would reflect upon this and find a way to heal themselves by loving their own 'self'... Hugs.. ~ Ani

I can completely relate to your poem. Thanks for sharing, profound, keep writing. I haven't learned the loving myself yet, that is most difficult.

Hi Diana, Thanks for such a comment. Learning to love yourself is the first to your healing. I pray that you learn to love yourself. I was able to love myself when I experienced the love of God because loved he me as I was. Thanks for reading and commenting. Have a great day;-)Alexis
