One Small Light
She had rehearsed the ending
over and over,
each step mapped in silence,
each heartbeat a countdown
to a world without her.
Days were heavy,
each one blending into the next.
Her room felt smaller than ever,
her thoughts louder than the world,
and she wondered if anyone
would notice
if she disappeared.
She walked outside anyway,
a stranger among strangers,
carrying the weight
of invisible storms.
Then, in the hum of the ordinary,
someone looked at her and said,
“You’re beautiful.”
A few words, light as a feather,
but they landed like sunlight
through the cracks in her chest.
She blinked, startled,
and suddenly the world
was not quite so gray.
She noticed the wind shaking leaves,
children laughing across the street,
the faint pink bleeding into the evening sky.
For the first time in days,
she breathed freely,
and life felt fragile
and astonishing all at once.
One small kindness
had reached across the silence,
a thread pulling her back
from the edge she thought was final.
And in that quiet moment,
she realized:
life still holds beauty,
still holds wonder,
and sometimes
all it takes
is one small light
to guide someone home.
