Notes About The Poem

One Simple Twilight

Do we truly ever notice them? Those rare and perfect moments? Did we pay enough attention? To keep them safely, guarded, and safely tucked away? It was summertime, at the end of an ordinary day We were sitting on our front porch steps Our children were playing in the yard The air was warm, the grass was green and fragrant The sun had disappeared over the trees, and the nearest hill The sky shone with hues of purple, pink and orange You pointed as a first star appeared Then reached for my hand, caressing it with the roughness of your thumb We never thought to get a camera Or to write about this particular moment in a journal We never mentioned it the next day....or the day after that.... Perhaps something we should have done Just so that we would never forget such a perfect twilight....

Carrie, your wonderful winner truly takes me back to those golden times, perhaps BECAUSE we didn't video, selfie, text, snapchat, and whatever EVERYTHING that happened to us. Yes, back then AND TODAY TOO we needed and need poets like you to recapture the magic moments, finding the extraordinary in the supposedly ordinary. Terrific 1st place trophy winner! :) Gershon

I agree, Gershon, that today we are all so wrapped up in making sure we record ourselves during all those treasured moments, that we miss the experience altogether. I often catch myself and wonder how it came to be that the moment itself is what matters :) thank you for your observation ! :)
