One September Song
Sunny light on an early morning weekday;
Heading south on a California freeway.
West was to my right; East to my left.
40 years have not erased just how I felt.
I remember well the time and the season.
It must have been near the birth of my second son,
Alonzo, who turned 40 just shy of three months ago.
Many thanks are due to a song I heard on the radio.
It was playing just as I reached the top of a hill, and
About the same moment I was feeling the thrill of being
Kissed by the rising sun. It was subline, and the moment
Was all mine. So powerful and timely was that song.
There's a snapshot of that flash of Divine
in the storage compartment of my mind
that reminds me from time to time,
just how pleasant a moment it was.
It was an awesome and beautiful song about a September morning.
