One Mans Treasure

An antique store’s the perfect place To browse among the shelves And see the past through objects People sloughed off of themselves. From dolls to clothes to dishes, Chairs and glassware, mirrors, books, The rooms are stacked with memories Whichever way one looks. Each item once held meaning For the owner, likely dead, Or living in a place with Much less cluttering instead. The browsers mostly look But sometimes dig inside for cash To cart home new-found treasure, Once somebody else’s trash.

Ilene, I love this. Browsing in little old shops was one of my greatest pleasures. Sadly, here they have disappeared entirely! Where there was a gallery of antique flavors, are now a Japanese noodle shop and pizzeria. But I still have some of my trophies from earlier hunts! Thank you for this lovely reminder!! Elizabeth

Some beautiful stories can be held in trash, but also sad and tragic ones. You've done justice to old treasures here Ilene!! Linda

Another charmingly delightful piece, Ilene. With the exception of a new vacuum cleaner recently, I haven't bought anything new in so long that my apartment is beginning to give off a faint aroma of "antiqueness". My mom was pretty big on antiques, but I've always been more interested in flea markets and thrift stores.

Luckily, I am old enough to know how useless items were used! Enjoyed this poem, and also enjoy Antiques RoadShow! Aloha!

Ilene loved how you gave the antiques an association with the past owners. Very engaging to the end... I'm reminded of garage sales too, where people have found expensive items and famous paintings. Love watching the Antique Road Show and watching the expressions of disbelief of finding out the Great Value of their item. Have a wonderful day...

So true Ilene, everything in antique and second hand shops has a bit of history attached to it. Tom

Very familiar with the front end of this process, having cleaned out my mother’s house after she died. I feel very sorry for my children!

Truer words could not be spoken, Ilene. I love to go to antique shops, but I also try to be very judicious about my purchasing. Sometimes people dispose of things because they are useless, and I simply do not need more useless stuff!
