what a sad tale of hardship. Sara. I'd like to see this one written as a free verse poem. You can say much more about the family. The third part is the most like haiku for me. I love that one about the butter shared for all the pancakes.

Dear Sara, What a sad story you have told beautifully in haiku form. What a sacrifice your grandmother made, devoting all of her attention to her children and not finding another man. It was a different era then and people had better priorities. Thanks for your comment on Crater Lake. My father took the family there once, but we had no idea there was a volcano below it. Love, Carolyn
