One Deliberate Beat

All the vampires formed a circle around the cage,

the young woman was clever by locking herself in,

as she watched their glare red with rage,

their cold hearts in search of her warm heat,

as her heart began one deliberate beat.

These vampires in one respect were like all the others,

they loved the thrill of the hunt and hated the anguish of defeat,

but the pickings were few,

they looked through the bars and really didn't know what to do.

The leader shook with rage,

the young woman locked in a cage,

he wedged his arm forcefully between the bars,

as the others grunted and looked on with effort,

as she smiled sheepishly and didn't even try to hide,

as they pushed the cage making her stumble inside.

As darkness filtered through the somber forest,

and her heart began to beat again,

deliberately as to tease them to no end.

The vampires breathed wildly as they turned the cage over to the ground,

riddled with rage, clatter and short out-bursts were the only sounds,

all they wanted to do was try to feed,

but she avoided the hunt as she locked herself in this cage,

and watched as she waited for a sign,

and there was one over the horizon and just in time,

the heat shook them as it came from the sun,

they had to abort the hunt as they stood crouched and ready to run,

they looked at the rising sun in terror,

as they had no choice and fled to the trees,

the young woman locked in a cage,

but was really free,

as the vampires left certainly not pleased,

she avoided their feed,

and her heart added one more deliberate beat,

escaping the cold and hanging on to the warmth and the heat.
