One Day Left

“If you want to see her, Auntie,
You must come soon as you can”.
That I should live beyond my niece,
Hadn’t been part of my plan.

I arrived soon after the others
Had all gone home, to let her rest.
It was after hours, her nice nurse
Let me in without protest.

Her eyes were closed, she opened them
To greet me with weary smile.
She looked so tired; I knew that I
Must stay only a short while.

I leaned closer to hear her voice,
“It’s been such a happy day.
Everyone has come to see me”,
The last words she’d ever say.

Her head fell as she closed her eyes,
“I’ll come again tomorrow”.
She did not respond next morning.
That day was filled with sorrow.

   **********************

When I have one day left to live,
The last words I hope to say,
“With my loved ones here around me,
This is such a happy day”.

So sad the grandniece had to die young, Joyce. But those last words -- I hope we can all say that our final day was happy because we were surrounded by loved ones. Very touching. Dying people are often filled with peaceful resignation. Best wishes in the contest, dear. Love, Carolyn
