One and One Made Three

I remember
I smiled once
You had that affect on me
There was nowhere else I wanted to be
Being with you was my ecstasy
Time stood still
You were like a happy pill
Or at least until
You became a yesterday

You took your love away
Still in the end it was okay
Night comes at the end of every day
You had somewhere else to be
I know now you weren't meant for me

For you love was a kinda game
I played it without the rules
Lovers love and boys can be fools
We sat at loves counter
You rotated the stools

I got dizzy on pretty
Your eyes gorgeous blue
It was hard to believe I was there with you
One was one and then we were two
At least until you decided that we were through

So I gained, a suspicious smile
Somewhat wary for a little while
Traded in substance for a bit of style
You left my heart on high alert
I learned to be cool
With an unbuttoned shirt
I made the rules so I wouldn't be hurt

In the end I wasn't being me
My one and ones
turned out to be threes
As I looked at them
it was you I would see

Realizing that became my key
I unlocked my heart
Finally set myself free
Leaving you in the past
So I could discover me
I needed to wait a while
Before becoming a we

When we survive the trials of life we find love and happiness waiting around the bend. We just have to choose to pick it up. I am glad you choose happiness.

Very genuine and heartfelt. I think we could all learn a lesson by discovering more of ourselves before adding others into the mix. The only part in this poem that left me a little bit off kilter was the second-to-last stanza... my one and ones turned out to be threes? Slightly confused... I thought of the title being more like "making a family"

the twos were me and other women I dated, the three was her who I couldn't get out of my mind so it was always like having 3 people on the date.

This great write reads like the story of my young life. I went thru the pill stage--"downers", while I went thru the heartache, heartbreak stage as a young man-- every girl I fell for was so beautiful yet so fickle. Life is dangerous for young people in love. The heart must be guarded and sheltered with tact and wisdom. Such young people so often lack. Fantastic write my friend! A7...

I met and married way to early myself. Married at 19 divorced at 28. Thankfully wisdom came with experience and I have been happily married for almost 21 years.
