Once, I Lived in the Hope

Once, I lived in the hope
that I would find her
alone somewhere

— a quiet courtyard
where we might dance
to music we heard
in our hearts;

a room we could fill
with the completed silence
of our love;

a wooded path where
we might walk rapt
in secret conversation

now, I no longer search
for her solitary self, because,
with her unfathomable mystery,
she populates
the ever-flowing world.

Everywhere, the glad discovery
she has become
smiles for me in every face,
surprising me with candor and hope,
serene as flowers, endless as light.

Now that she is
my vision-in-waiting everywhere
I say, Thank you!
I say, Oh, brave new world
that hath such a creature in it!
