Notes About The Poem

For the Image Prompt Poetry Contest of Suzette Richards

On Rain-swept Pavement

Her flirty white skirt
swings back and forth as she lightly steps
on an avenue lit by street lamps
that cast a yellow light
matching the color
of the flowers in her hands.
Walking past her and wearing
a hat as black as hers
is a well-suited gent.
Two ships, they pass in the dusk.

Congratulations of course is very much in order for this precisely worded and crafted piece. Level of detailed observation compels admiration without sacrificing literary quality. It’s very flattering that you spend so much time sifting through my earlier work. I value that Howard

Congratulations Andrea on your third place win in my contest, Metamodern Imagism, with this poem that is obedient to the image, bringing to it an emotionally subtle and rhythmically smooth cadence. It doesn’t try to impress—it tries to see. And that’s what I asked for. I loved you closing line - original.

Well deserved, Andrea. As always, you study the brief before you put pen to paper and it shows. The new challenge should be just up your street.
