On Pain:
“ON PAIN”
listen to all of it in any way you can.
listen to the way it laughs at you.
listen to the names it calls you.
stare at the finger it uses to point
at you.
stare at the eyes is uses to
judge you.
stare at the back it turns to you.
stand in front of it.
walk beside it.
walk with your back to the
world while you face it.
look at the frame around
each picture.
there is a pause inside life
that’s eternal.
the arms on the clock will
remind you:
soon it will be over.
look at the wood that makes
your dining room chairs.
look at the fruit that rots
inside your fruit bowl.
look at the shadows that line
your walls.
pay attention to all of it.
you can’t climb the beanstalk
without it.
you can’t assemble your army
without it.
you can’t wind your music box
without it.
these walls will look at you
and wait for your triumph.
keep going.
keep going.
keep going.
like the alley cat in search
of a meal, hustle the stem
and your roses will sell.
keep going.
