On Mending Fences
On Mending Fences
(Some fences have needed mending so long
That neither party recalls why the breech occurred;)

That very first step
Always seems hardest to take,
The fear of rejection
Is the ante both have at stake?
Though both parties
Be desirous of the self same things,
Oft times a haughty spirit
Snuffs the joy a first step brings.
It may be just a simple case
Of not knowing where to start,
Though God always makes a way,
When he has troubled my heart.
I’m inundated with thoughts
That might weigh on the other’s mind,
My justification for doing nothing
Is fear they might be unkind.
Years finally become a chasm
Until finally I no longer feel,
Pride has robbed me of a loved one
Because of my misplaced zeal.
So I’ll not consent to being destroyed
By the answer I least expected,
For my physical death will not come
Simply by my being rejected.
