On May Sixteenth
I waited as I always do
for at this time what would ensue!
It happens in the month of May.
Like clockwork, it again came true.
It was a quite nice, sunny day
as I drove up on my driveway,
beside which stands a lovely tree
nearby where starlings like to play.
I saw those starlings soaring free,
and as they swooped, enchanting me,
to my front porch my eyes were drawn.
Can you guess then what I did see?
Five rose bushes my eyes fell on -
the only bushes by my lawn.
Though all through winter they’d been dead,
they’ve greened up with cold weather gone.
Spring’s here for sure. Yes, winter’s fled,
and never have I been misled
by Mother Earth. I’m welcomed each
mid-May by that first rose of red.
