On Holiday

You’ll be gone a month.
You promised, “I'll bring you back
a mer-man from the sea...”
Small solace for missing your tag-
ends of morning chit-chat
over cups of tea.

And how does one prepare
for a merman? Can he survive
at this elevation, this desert?
Doesn’t he prefer his conversation
tidal? Shall I just arrange
to meet you at the beach?
