On A Rainy Evening in The City

Your ear has to be tuned to hear the City's rhythms buried below the noise and be able to discern a melody woven through the dissonant chatter as in the rumble and splash of motorcar tyres moving along streets slicked with watery reflections and in the jarring grind of tram wheels, screeching brakes and warning bells and in the cadence of human voices as heard in quiet conversations and loud yells - to feel a sense of elation when all the scattered notes of a City come together and you hear its surprising song.

I am not a city fan but being an expat for a long time l have lived in quite a few. At times as a expat in a new country it can be quite lonely and isolating and those city sounds comforted me at those times reminding me there was a world outside my world.Your amazing poem Paul reminded me of those days….and once again l was on a journey! You my lovely friend are”King of the Journeys” haha….love it! Debx

Once upon a time, I worked in downtown Dallas. I loved 'listening to the city'--it had its own invisible rhythm that only became audible if I paused. I loved the pulse of your poem and of my city. thanks for this poem. Faving.
