Old Wishes

     Old wishes rattle
     like dry bones,
     or like tossed dice
     hitting a dead end~
     no Yatzee™
     to finish the year~
     while we pray
     at midnight
     that evil spirits
     don't cross over
     and hex
     our new year's
     resolutions.

The ending, with its focus on new year's resolutions being "hexed," leaves the poem on a slightly ambiguous note. It suggests that even our best intentions can be thwarted by unseen forces or simply by the passage of time. This sense of uncertainty is a fitting conclusion to a poem about old wishes and the anxieties of the future. It’s a well-crafted and resonant piece.
