Old Abilene

I Poet: Ken Jordan
Poem: Old Abilene
Edited by: Sparkle Jordan

God
is a
Texas sheriff,

down
in
old Abilene -

He has
pale
white skin,

tall
in
stature,

brawny,
with
a
deep voice,

and
a coy sly
grin -

He's
the judge
and
jury -

for all
people
of
black skin.

God
is a
Texas Sheriff
down
in
old Abilene -

"Boy!
I have
a notion
to

take you
round yonder,

and
string you
up,

from that
poplar
tree -

But,

Since you
just
passing through
my town,

I'm gonna
set
you free.

Don't you
ever come
back
black boy,

don't even
pass
through,

cause
black boy,

If I see
you,

Kneel
and

say
your prayers,

For
I'm gonna
put
your neck

in
a noose

and
hang you

from
a popular
tree -

God,
is
truly

a
Texas Sheriff

down in
old
Abilene -
