ODE TO MY BROTHER
Your race in life began in ’64,
When God first opened success’s door.
You grew up tall and strong and true,
With blond hair bright and eyes of blue.
Both brains and skill were gifts you bore,
Watching you grow was a thrill and more.
Football, baseball, basketball, too—
No challenge ever hindered you.
We watched with love and endless pride,
As you became the apple of our eye.
All the while, a demon stood,
Lurking silent, misunderstood
Waiting, watching from the side,
To tempt you at the perfect time.
The struggle came when you weren’t looking,
You fought and grappled with all your might,
Trying hard to stay upright.
Praying to God, “Please help me win,”
As the demon pulled and pushed you to give in.
The battle raged for fifty years and more,
We prayed to God as tears would pour.
You fought so long, you fought so strong,
Through endless nights, through right and wrong.
On January 26th, the year 2026,
God touched your shoulder, gentle and kind.
With a smile both tender, loving, and sad,
He said, “Come home, my son, you’ve been a good man.
Take my hand as we travel to a wonderful land.
Your pain is gone, you’ll never be alone
For now, my son,
You are home.”
