Ode To a Hummingbird

I see him Flutter over a rose, then darting to take another
Dinner is his first delight, not much tolorace for his brother
I see him watching from a distant bush, he stares in silent sweep
Then in his swiftest, driving flare, I hear his tiny peep

Could he be an impostor, a mighty hawk wrapped in his smallest disguise
I watch his feats of bravery, I can hardly believe my eyes
With daring determination, he stakes out the richest clam
Ready to take on all who dare, he guards his mini domaine

A bee battles to take his bloom while buzzing into his View But diving back hard, I can hear the thud, he takes back his tasty menu
A neighbor comes to steal his right, a breeze fuffle the ruby plume
But the Hummer rallies to resume the fight, protecting the flowering bloom

He must sit his nest in turn; for he leaves, then suddenly, he’s back
From morning till evening he shares his time, keeping his day on track
The morning is when I sit my chair, my attention in stone is cast
A rose in bloom and it’s rocking sway, much more than I can ask

The hummer is sure to make his flight, before the sun dries the dew
He appears as my optics rove, at high speed he flashes through
Another day of wonder and awe as I watch from my little home For all good thing must end in time and the Hummers will all be gone

Thank you Milton. They're tough and fun to watch.

A wonderful write, Patrick. I'm a big fan of the hummers. They are, indeed, fierce and determined. I've watched them many times as you described. Good writing!
