It really gets my goat the way some people treat their animals. They seem to think if a dog is supposed to be good with kids then they don't have to watch the kid and the dog play together. WRONG!                                                                                                                                         Sure lots of dogs are good with kids but you still have to TEACH them how to interact with the child. They aren't simply BORN with that knowledge. Just like you have to TEACH THE CHILD HOW TO INTERACT WITH THE DOG TOO. If you don't the child is going to end up getting bit and then you will blame the dog when it really isn't his fault. Often the dog gives plenty of warning before he snaps. It's up to the adult to pay attention.

Hound dogs are the most misunderstood dogs I've found.

People think they are supposed to be good hunting dogs but they don't stop to think they have to TEACH THE DOG WHAT IS EXPRCTED OF HIM. Sure they have the instinct but they have to be trained how to use it.

Before a person acquires a pet they should learn what is required to take the proper care of such an animal. It's cruel to get a dog and chain it outside and just give it food and water and then ignore it. Dogs are pack animals and need the companionship of others. If they don't have another dog to associate with then YOU are in their mind their PACK, their FAMILY. They need your attention.

Some folks will say that he's just a hound, But no finer dog could ever be found. I have to admit that a hound's hard to train, But that's just because he must first grow a brain. He's so happy-go-lucky and such a real tease. He's so full of love and desires just to please, But he gets into trouble more often than not, 'Cause he's curious of nature and gets into a lot. The things that he does shows an active mind. He just has to mature, he just needs some time, To show the intelligence inate in his breed. He's tenacious and brave this is his creed. He can find any trail that he's set upon. Just give him the scent and then he is gone. He won't give up until he's caught his prey, And you'll know where to find him by his noted bay. You don't want to lose him, he's not something you lend. He's your dog, he's your buddy, he's your best friend. You can look high and low but his like can't be found. There ain't no such animal as this dog "Just a Hound".

I love our Labrador, she brings us such joy, and is so enormously clever - you teach your animals just as you teach your children and the love that dogs give is totally unconditional, wonderful poem Judy, so well penned my friend. Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.

Yes, if a dog is bred for a specific job like being a bird dog or rat/squirrel dog they have the instinct but they have to be trained to use those instincts. One never knows when a dog will turn into the aggressive mode so they have to be watched when around people in general especially children. Enjoyed reading your work. Thanks for the visit to my page. I just love this - also love what you've written with it. Dogs are so amazing and I love them to the moon, but they have to have understanding. Love it, Gina

Your poem dearest, Judy shows a deep knowledge of our best friend and the advice you give is so valuable. In Greece, just the last two monts two little children were killed by the family dog. A tragedy we, animal lovers, have to keep in mind.

It sounds like hound dogs get a bad rap, Judy. Hunters and rescue workers rely heavily on them. And I agree that we have to be careful when young children are drawn to pets. A very meaningful poem that sparked my compassion for the hound. Hugs, Carolyn
