This occurred the first night I met my wife to be, in 1974
Our hearts were not yet knit, but later on a date.
But then is when I knew you were my true and life-long mate.
Though we had scarcely met and parted hours before,
you came without a sound, right through my night-locked door,
and I was not awake.
But waking upright with a start you stood before my bed,
as close as three feet or four to me, your torso and your head.
Three short words came from your lips, just three soft words were spoken:
‘I love you’, was what night vision said, and that was God’s sure token,
and I was now awake.
