Night Time Imaginings
“Sleep well my dear there is nothing to fear
what you see in the daylight
is here in the dark night
you just cannot see it so clear”
Waking up in the blackness
in the middle of the night
your bedroom so dark
you think a monster is there
Lurking in the corners
you think you hear him breathing
you think you hear him moving
you are paralyzed with fear
Shut your eyes tightly
he may think you’re sleeping
but your heart beats so fast it will burst
your mouth is dry
you are dying of thirst
you call for your Mum
no comes out
You have no voice
You have no words
You cannot scream or shout
So under the duvet you dive
blocking your ears with your hands
your salty tears run down your cheek
so desperately tired you just want sleep
Then suddenly you hear Mum calling
saying time to get up and get dressed
you nervously worm your way out from the duvet
and see that the blackness has gone
Was it a nightmare
or night time imaginings
Did darkness distort
giving you such a fright
No sign of the monster
you heard in the night
and you laugh
and you dance
and you shriek with delight
Then recalling Grandma’s words
as she kissed you goodnight
she would pause at the door
before turning out your light
saying “Sleep well my dear
there is nothing to fear
what you see in the daylight
is here in the dark night
you just cannot see it so clear”
