Night of Fright

Night of Fright

Dark intones creeping mists that enshrouds barren trees
Goblin dance on wild wings fear unleashed…shrieking fright
Shadows creep, ghosts arise, full moon shines…mystery
Folklore rules in pale light…smothers all candlelight

Haunted night ghost brides fly…specters float dread writes scripts
Footsteps sound, muffled loud, moaning through empty gloom
Creaking stairs lead to crypts no way back…panic grips
Swirling fogs, wraiths unleashed for one night from their tombs.

Howling hounds, rat’ling chains no escape…terror reigns
Whispers from bony hands haunt this night…spooky plans
Pulse that pounds, heart that faints with ghost tales unexplained
Fetid fumes cobweb snares shrouds the graves…time’s quick sands.

Hallows’ Eve, angels watch night of fright …spirits bold
‘Til twelve bells sends them back, haunted space, tales untold.

I feel you are an expert at composing spooky poems and ghostly tales. Indeed terror striking....! In your poems, I see a natural way of unfolding ghastly scenes one by one. This is indeed a great sonnet satisfying all stipulations of an anapestic tetrameter. Best of luck dear Sam for your entry in the contest

Valsa, dear friend, thank you! I am so humbled by your wonderful feedback! I guess Halloween is a time when I let my imagination run as wild as the wild ghosts and goblins of All Hallows Eve! I tend to see poems like movies or plays that unfold before the reader's eyes. I am so happy that shows. It took me awhile to pick up the cadence of this tetrameter but it was fun to work with once I got it - almost like a Halloween drumbeat! Many thanks for your good wishes! Blessings!

Hi Janice! Thank you so much! For me, All Hallow's Eve really provides some great scenarios for poems - ghosts, goblins, haunted houses and all the unexplainable myths and stories. Thanks for sharing this scary-spooky night! Blessings.

Hi Michael! A heartfelt thank you to you! For me All Hallows' Eve is not only about the fun and spooky things of the holiday but also about laughing at death. "Death where is your sting?" We get to rejoice in that victory! Hope you are well. Blessings of the season to you!

Thanks so much Andrea! I think I've mentioned before that I love the spooky elements of Halloween, the playful costumes, the pumpkins, the colors. This poem, while it has some scary parts, was a fun experience. Happy Halloween to you!
